So she finds a way to switch places with her twin brother, Thom. Disguised as a boy, Alanna begins her training as a page at the palace of King Roald. But the road to knighthood, as she discovers, is not an easy one. Alanna must master weapons, combat, and magic, as well as polite behavior, her temper, and even her own heart. Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna’s first adventure begins—one that will lead to the fulfillment of her dreams and make her a legend in the land.

"This book was first read under extreme duress over 17 years ago, and I have thanked my mother and librarian for recommending/forcing me to try something new (I was going through the judging a book by its cover phase). Twins decide to swap places so the girl could be a knight and the boy could be taught magic. Breaking gender norms, "Alan" aka Alanna, faces challenges head on and begins her journey towards legendary status- not too mention her infamous anger and quick wit. This is a YA novel with very mild adult references, but thats not saying subjects are avoided. "
