Agatha Christie
An unhappy game of romantic follow-the-leader explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow, home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell, arguably Christie's finest comic grande dame. Dr. Cristow, the Harley Street lothario, is at the centre of the trouble when, assembled in one place, we find his dull but devoted wife Gerda, his mistress and prominent sculptor Henrietta and his former lover and Hollywood film star Veronica. Also visiting are Edward and Midge whose romantic assertions are likewise thrown into the mix. As the list of romantic associations grows so does the list of potential suspects when Cristow is shot dead. Nearly everyone has a motive but only one of them did the deed.

"Oy. Reading Agatha Christie is just plain bad for me, not only because of her disquieting picture of human society as one dismal cesspool of greed, lust, and calculated evil; but the casual racism of so many of her characters. I counted at least 4 uses of the N word (including a chocolate and cream dessert charmingly titled "N*gg*r in His Shirt) and this repugnant description of the dreadful boss abusing our WASPy heroine: the "vitriolic little Jewess...with dyed hair" and a "thick nose, henna red hair and a disagreeable voice".

No more. I enjoy the Poirot tv series and the Kenneth Branagh movies which at least attempt to address the racism of Christie's society, but the books make me sick."
