Towns such as Vicki's don't have any distance from the Others, the dominant predators who rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what is out there watching you.Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe--one of the shape-shifting Others--discovers a murdered man, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, ancient forces are roused by the disturbance in their domain. "I loved this book. I want to visit Sproing. Have you ever seen a quokka? Australian animals with adorable smiley faces. These animals live in Sproing. They are called Sproingers. I really wanted to live vicariously through a character cuddling one. (They never did.) The spoilers hop all over town getting carrots and treats from storekeepers. When something interesting happens, they make pyramids to look in windows. Squee!

"Sometimes when a series switches characters, it can be a turn off. Something about the story isn't close enough, too similar, or just not as interesting. I admit, the first two chapters, I wondered if this would fall into any of those. The first two chapters were a little slow for me. Maybe I was resisting a world where The Meg wasn't the center of the story, maybe it was a lack of Simon. Whatever it was, it didn't last long.

Then something amazing happened. I fell into the book and the story came alive. The characters are familiar in the sense we know of the Crowgard, Beargard, and so forth. Vicki was new. And I liked her. I loved reading as she seamlessly made connections with the Others. The Others, learning from the Lakeside Courtyard, supported and backed their trusted humans.

We even get to see tiny glimpses of the first five books. The fall out of the Humans First and Last movement, they tiny glimpse of the sweet bloods and how they are fairing, and the changes that have rippled out of the Lakeside Courtyard.

This was an absolute pleasure to read. I'm excited to read more about the new characters and how their ripples will spread to others."
