"How do I put this delicately. It was very vanilla. Fae, in general, are tricksy with an underlined sinister humor. They live forever, so why would they care if they ruined the short life of a mortal. These fae were.... nice and overly helpful. There was plenty of fae diversity, too, but instead of occurring naturally throughout the book, it felt like a list was checked off. ✔️Okay, we got the witch with the bird nest in her hair. Most fae are dark and creepy. There were none of those here.
Even though I'm mostly complaining, I was enjoying it as I read. The author kept secrets I wanted to uncover, and fantasy is fantasy. A relaxing place apart from our world. But when I got to the end and looked back, I realized nothing had progressed. In almost six hundred pages, the plot nor the relationship moved much more than an inch.
The world building needed work. The magic was not properly explained. Even the name-dropping left the side characters feeling washed out. I was so busy worrying about the secrets I realized there wasn't much substance behind it. It seemed like every time I went to grasp a quintessential part of the world, it flitted away through my fingers.
Still, I did enjoy Bristols character. She wasn't the best at everything or the brightest, but she worked hard. I feel the author really missed out with the other characters, though. Like she was on the edge of something great. Even so, somehow, with all the povs, I didn't get to know anyone. In the end, it was missing the dark fae allure, and it was forgettable, unfortunately."
