"Clever multilayered mystery

Englishwoman Mia meets Emily at an LA audition and agrees to do an innocuous favor for her. When Mia returns to the audition, Emily is gone. So begins this well-woven tale of disappearance, threats and mistaken identities in Hollywood. I learned about this book through the NYTimes Book Review podcast. I liked Mia, the lead character, and willingly followed her through red herrings and into a resolution that was less satisfying than I hoped. Nevertheless, the book captured and kept my attention."
"It kept my attention and I definitely enjoyed it. But almost too far fetched. Would probably rate 3.5.
Mia’s boyfriend dumps her without tell her. Her agent tells her she needs a fresh start and sends her to LA to audition for roles there. At her audition she meets Emily. Emily starts acting odd about the meter running out and her car getting towed. Mia offers to feed her meter while Emily auditions. Emily is not seen again. Mia feeling uneasy starts looking for her. She finds her phone number in the lease agreement. She texts her to give her back her wallet. Emily comes to pick it up and when Mia sees her she realizes that is not Emily at all. Someone acting like her. Mia goes to the house on the cars rental agreement and confront the fake Emily. The fake Emily says her name is Jordan and she was hired to be Emily and the pay was good so she did it. Jordan leaves the house and says she quits that it’s all too weird for her. Mia searches the apartment and finds her laptop and phone. She’s able to see all Emily’s texts leading up to her disappearance. She text her friend Marla to see what happened to Emily. She also finds a recording on Emily’s computer of her being raped by a huge producer and finds out Emily was blackmailing them for a role when she disappeared. When she sees a picture of Marla she realizes that Marla was the Emily she met at auditions so she never actually met Emily. Marla tells her Emily had been dead and that the producer did it. She said the reason Mia is involved is because the role Mia auditioned for and was offered was the role the producer promised to Emily to kelp her quiet and since she was dead Marla blackmailed them to get the role for herself. They get in a scuffle and Mia thinks she killed Marla by pushing her off the Hollywood sign but they never find her."
"Overall I enjoyed this book, but I would not say it’s one of my favorites. I wish there was an option to say it’s ok. I felt the characters obsession was not believable, don’t want to say more as it will be a spoiler. "
