ITW Thriller Award winnerInternational Book Awards winner Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave. They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past. Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price. But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way - even if it kills her. Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

"Not everyone will like this book. I'm not sure I "enjoyed" it. Once I started, it was like an itch in my brain that I couldn't ignore. I had to finish it.
Maggie and Nina are mother and daughter. Nina has her mother imprisoned in the attic. Every other day, she switches the chain attached to Maggie's metal ankle cuff to a longer chain. She helps Maggie downstairs where they eat together in the dining room. Maggie often tries to escape.
Who is the villain? Is it Maggie- who did something so awful her daughter locked her up in the attic? Or is it Nina? You don't really know for sure until the epilogue.
This would be an awesome book for book clubs as there is so much to discuss.
- If you were in Maggie's shoes, what would you have done the night Alistair disappeared.
- Nina works as a librarian but regularly steals books from the library? What clues did this give you into Nina's personality?
- Maggie's choices when Nina first got pregnant were a bit unorthodox. How did you feel about her choices at the time? After finishing the book and looking back, have your feelings changed?
- How would you handle Nina's behavior after her father's disappearance?
- Maggie loses her will to live after Bobby. If she had known about what happened to him, would the ending of the book been different?
- In the epilogue, Nina has a dream. How did the dream change your feelings about Maggie?

"4/5 I love hated this book. It was so different than anything I’ve ever read which was cool yet frustrating. I can’t say too much without giving anything away but if you’re looking for something a little outside of the box give this a read!"
