"Excellent book with two separate stories in it. The first is the title of the book and is about an attorney (Martha) who moves from a Birmingham, AL law office to a small town (Erva, AL) for a job as a public defender that turns out to be too good to be true. She has a son who is 5 years old and when she gets to Erva, she finds some things that are very odd, including a former law school classmate who is being held in the local jail. When Martha crosses some people in power, she ends up in jail herself and she must fight with all she has to get out of jail and get her son back, as well as get the people responsible, removed from power and put behind bars.

The second story is titled Power of Attorney, and is about Leah who is a young 28 year old woman who moves back home to Bassville, Arkansas from Chicago after he becomes disillusioned with her position at the current law firm working to defend an insurance company. Leah hadn't been home in 6 years, and coming home isn't easy because many people (including her parents) are still unhappy with her about leaving. Once Leah is home, she finds out that her father is suffering from Alzheimer's and the gossip mill around town is almost too much to bare. Leah's father is also an attorney, and Leah starts working in his office to clean up the cases and clients he was working with when he became too ill to continue. This is when Leah ends up picking the case of Amber Travis who ends up being accused of the murders of her cousins Dale and Glenna Maggard who were shot and killed before they were burned up in their home."
