"Don’t know how to categorize this? Dark romantasy? I think it’s like “Butcher and Blackbird” where it’s a way to ease yourself into dark romance/fantasy. Following a necromancer who is trying to save her sister from a deadly game, her home, and a phantom who seems tied to this mysterious, deadly game. Phantasma is moving haunted houses that gives riches to the winner, however other contestants a usually end up dead. When Ophelia’s sister enters the competition, she must as well, only to find an attractive phantom who’s tied to the game and house in unknown ways. He strikes a bargain: help him unlock his memories and he’ll help Ophelia win the game, but will this put her in more danger? ⚠️ trigger warnings, gore and spice! To me, this is like if Caraval had a darker, broodier older sister that would have sex and murder people. "
"BOTM marketed this as a paranormal romance and I couldn’t add it to my box fast enough. I adored this novel and everything about it was a slam dunk for me. Paranormal elements, gothic atmosphere, bizarre sentient house full of ghosts and devils, elaborate games and riddles, and a soul crushing love story centuries in the making. What’s not to love? I didn’t think the gore was over the top by any means so if the blurbs likening this to the Saw movies puts you off like it almost did me, I would still consider giving this novel a chance. Personally, I would say this story is still worth reading even if you have to skip over the gory parts in some chapters just to make it through. "
"Aw okay I loved this book. It has some flaws, and I figured out the ending long before I got there, but I really loved it. It’s like a ghost version of Caraval, which I think is super fun. While it’s a standalone connected to other standalones, I definitely will read other books in the series 🌹"
