Kira Cornforth It was written by a white man a long time ago. That’s it lol. I hear a lot of ppl actually think it’s super boring and poorly written in some parts (I also hear it’s an excellent resource for writers who struggle with their world building)

Ashley I think it was just innovative at the time of its release. Kind of a staple of the genre. I liked it okay. I think when you have to have an index for the book because you didn't explain anything in it at all then it's not so well written. There were very interesting ideas and I enjoyed what I learned but it was a job to actually read.

CaitVD This is attached to Chapterhouse (the last one completed by Frank and where it should have been left, imo), have you read through the preceding ones, also? Strap in, I’ve got a novel in response for you. 😂 In my opinion, which is just my own, I loved the 6 book series so much, and my love grew as it went on, though I didn’t really get the hype after the first book. I love the shifting perspectives between the books and their sometimes common but sometimes VERY at odds goals and motivations between different groups and individuals. I love how each book opens up the world more and more. Most of all, I love the heavy use of allusion and leaving it to the reader to put things together. Frank Herbert does it so effectively it almost puts you right in the story as a character, trying to decipher pretext and actions. The world building is amazing. And as much as I don’t care for most of the characters, they are extremely well developed. I do wish his son hadn’t continued the series to the best of his ability, but hey, gotta love a guy for trying. This is not to say other authors have not gone on to make similarly amazing sci fi series, there are a lot of books/series I would put ahead of this on my list of favorites, but this one (to me) is unique.

iuArt To me dune was like star wars, but better plot world building and character development I binged the 3 books. But as audiobooks so that's probably why I lasted through them.

Lisa Hayes I think it’s more about the social commentary that he makes about the power of even the best intended charismatic leaders.

Denis Martinovic The issue is the attention span of some of the readers here, it’s not a slog to read as it gets into intresting scenes and moves through the story at a good pace without too much excess. dune is not like Star Wars it’s decades older so Star Wars is like dune. I didn’t have a problem reading it, the pacing was fine, the world building was amazing, and all around Frank created a series that inspired so many other authors to build similar worlds and themes. Also having an index isn’t a problem for a sci fi 60 years old, it was quite common to have pages worth of disposition to explain the sci fi tech or the sci fi language to be used in the book, rather than doing that Dune put an index at the back instead of pages of boring disposition, and it’s an old story, so old we didn’t even get to the moon yet at the time.
