"The latest in the horror anthology series is trending in the right direction. The theme this year is sci-fi horror. There are 6 segments and all of them with the exception of one had some sort of alien situation. The one that didn't which was directed by Justin Long (who knows a thing or 2 about horror) was about a group of kids trying to expose animal cruelty. They go undercover to hire her and she gets suspicious and does something about it. It wasn't a twist or anything but gave you something different. In fact none of the stories had any kind of twist and were all straight forward. They decided to use this first person camera angle which got old quickly. Maybe they should take more time to get the quality up instead of cranking these out every October. It was just ok to me. "this was the first one in the franchise that i watched. i figured if i really loved it i would go and watch the other ones. i thought it was pretty good at some parts but others were ok. the acting wasn’t the best and i don’t know if that’s like part of the franchise or anything so that could be on my part. i did enjoy the movie and they are very cool concepts. "A bit of a letdown and step backwards from VHS 85 in my opinion. With the exception of segments “Live and Let Dive” which was amazingly well done and fun as hell and “Stowaway” directed by Kate Siegel I thought all segments were kind of…eh. Nothing special or outright dumb. The segment “Dream Girl” was a complete dud and “Fur Babies” felt very out of place with this collection focused on aliens. I’m all for segments having fun but VHS 85 felt like it went back to the OG tone of the original VHS and VHS 2 which actually tried to scare you and succeeded quite a bit. I love Shudder but since they’ve taken over this franchise with the exception VHS 85 the vast majority of the segments have been outright comical in tone. If it works great but the vast majority of the time it comes off as totally incongruent and has fallen flat. One other thing, the wrap around segment in this was one of the poorest in the franchise with the exception of VHS 94. C’mon Shudder! It’s time to up the ante! "
