"Finally got around to watching this since it's leaving the Criterion Collection. There are some strange John Waters-isms that I don't particularly care for and some jokes that feel needlessly offensive (which is also a John Waters staple). However, this film also features the line "I worry that you'll work in an office, have children, celebrate wedding anniversaries. The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life." Which would make it worth it for me on it's own but the "who wants to die for art" scene is in this too. Which is a scene I was already familiar with... Although I'm not sure from where. I used to go to drag shows and one of those might have done a play on it or something. Honestly, there are a lot of iconic moments so I did end up digging it more than not. Be aware though; when I say it's needlessly offensive, I mean it. There are jokes about just about every uncomfortable topic you can imagine including sexual assault and pedophilia some of which I even found a bit too intense for the tone. I've said before that I'd prefer something out there and offensive to something safe and boring and John Waters really puts that to the test sometimes."
