"At First Sight (1999) is a romantic drama directed by Irwin Winkler, inspired by Dr. Oliver Sacks' essay "To See and Not See." The story follows Virgil Adamson (Val Kilmer), a charming and independent blind man living a simple life in a small town where he works as a massage therapist.
When Amy Benic (Mira Sorvino), a stressed-out New York architect, visits Virgil’s spa for a retreat, the two strike up a heartfelt connection and fall in love. As their relationship deepens, Amy learns about an experimental surgical procedure that could restore Virgil's sight. Although initially reluctant, Virgil agrees to the surgery in hopes of sharing a more conventional life with Amy.
The film explores themes of love, perception, and self-discovery, highlighting the tension between the beauty of new experiences and the challenges of adapting to life-changing circumstances. Ultimately, At First Sight examines the idea that true connection transcends physical abilities, and seeing with the heart is often more important than seeing with the eyes."
