"4.25⭐️ Rewatch & personal favorite 🤩
“Time. Places. People. They’re all speeding up. So to cope with this evolutionary paranoia, strange people are chosen who, through their art, can move progress more quickly.”
~ Toni Collette as Angie Bowie through the fictional iteration of Mandy Slade
If you love David, Iggy, T. Rex, Cabaret, Rocky Horror, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and the phenomenal Hedwig and the Angry Inch .. you are my people and this is our movie.
It will not be for everyone.
Velvet Goldmine is a gloriously decadent, colorfully campy, and … to apply a term I use much too much 😬 (but if not here then nowhere!) ... a glitzy gaudy glam rock FEVER DREAM. If you’re looking for a straight (pun intended) lineal plot you won’t find it here. Instead Todd Haynes offers up a dazzling idiosyncratic kaleidoscope of color, sound and sex wrapped in glitter, boas and spandex unitards. Though it has a story, a mythology of a Bowie-esque but fictionalized touchpoint in glam culture, it’s best to just get aboard the glitter train and not overly question the narrative. Once immersed in the buoyantly electric soundtrack, spectacular musical performances (especially by Ewan McGregor!) and the anything-goes cultural self expression that was the 70s, the ride is mesmerizing.
“It’s only now looking back, I see how you patched through my walls and entered my life, in waves.”
So, gonna try not to utter any more derivative “fever dreams” but I make no promises. "
"Yeah, I just love this one. Probably one of the films I’ve rewatched the most during my teenage years. Platform shoes, glitter, queerness, glorious soundtrack, Ewan McGregor jumping onstage naked while sprinkling himself with glitter, Jonathan Rhys Meyers blowing Ewan McGregor’s electric guitar… Unauthorized, over-the-top biopic perfection."
"THIS MOVIE IS SERIOUSLY UNDERRATED!!! If you like David Bowie, 70s glam, proto punk, or gay stuff, this is it. It’s one of the few movies I own on DVD, and my most prized vinyl is the soundtrack for this film. It’s not an easy narrative to follow and might take a few watches to fully understand, but it’s worth it. The magical realism is enchanting and the soundtrack is heart pounding. Plus it has an amazing cast, with Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor, and Toni Collette. "
