There were five Marines and one Navy Corpsman photographed raising the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. This is the story of three of the six surviving servicemen - John 'Doc' Bradley, Pvt. Rene Gagnon and Pvt. Ira Hayes - who fought in the battle to take Iwo Jima from the Japanese.

Tracey Thoughts….💭
"Despite it’s imperfections, I’m especially impressed not only exploring the soldiers’ trials and tribulations experienced in battle exclusively from the American perspective (with particular focus on the raising of the flag in Iwo Jima), but also explore the PTSD they experience back home as well (with a hard-hitting ending too). Impressively staged battle sequences and ensemble cast performances (especially Adam Beach), paired with strong cinematography, editing, and sound design. The fact that Clint Eastwood directed this and LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA (which looks at the same battle from the Japanese perspective) at the same time is impressive, and they make great companion pieces to each other (even if I preferred IWO JIMA overall). Both movies (especially LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, which ranks among my favorite war movies) are heavily recommended."

"Love this movie. I know it’s historically accurate but it’s still good. This was my first exposure to Adam Beach. Love him. He is underrated to me. The movie is about an very important battle in WWII. And done very well. Worth watching. Hope you will. "
