"Spooktober Movie 11: You know, this movie really zeroed in and expanded upon a few of the themes of the original Dracula that I hadn't thought significantly about and it got me thinking in depth about the many themes of that book and how you could play with and focus of different ones to create vastly different works of reinterpretation and deconstruction. This movie also has a lot of down time so I did consider just that. This adaptation really zeroes in on the themes of pestilence by making prominent the ties to rats from the original and explicitly tying it to the plague which definitely hit harder watching in a time of plague and that also easily ties into themes of death and the philosophy surrounding eternal life. It also brings around Lucy as a character by giving her way more agency in the story in one of its biggest changes which could be seen as a feminist deconstruction of her lack of agency in the original and the dismissal of her perspective as "hysterics" (also she's played by Isabelle Adjani who remains one of the most underrated actors of all time). There's also themes of anarchy as the plague leads to essentially a stateless society but idk if that has much to do with the original. But in the book there's also potential themes of orientalism and xenophobia (ie foreign invaders infecting people) that are somewhat touched on in Dracula: Pages from a Virgins Diary. Themes of sex (the hunger being an animalistic base desire) which was the basis for a lot of exploitation Hammer horror involving Dracula. Capitalism and wealth (a wealthy man sucking the life out of poorer people to maintain his power) which I'm told us a primary theme of the original Nosferatu. If you wanted to you could really lean into the religious good vs evil themes to tell a Christian story. I dunno. I don't really have a huge central point here. Just thinking a lot about theme and adaptation and rambling in turn. Check this out if you have Shudder. I dug it."
