"Incredible movie! This is a hard-hitting movie that succeeds in pulling off an incredible balancing act that makes you think deeply regarding where to draw the line between judgement, sympathy, and empathy as well as about capital punishment (especially towards people who have committed horrific crimes). Phenomenal direction by Tim Robbins who succeeds in setting the right tone required for such a subject matter and not to mention the performances of the 2 main leads (Sean Penn as a convicted murderer and Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen Prejean, a nun who is counseling Penn’s character during the days leading up to his scheduled execution). I’m glad that all 3 (Robbins, Sarandon, and Penn) got extremely well deserved Oscar nominations for this film (with Sarandon deservedly winning Best Actress, her first win after 4 previous losses). Fantastic editing and score too (the intro song with Bruce Springsteen and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is particularly great). This is a movie that everybody needs to see."
