"A great sci-fi fantasy film set around the story of the seven samurai though with a mythology of galactic implications, as the history of one character shows the backstory and what brought her to a simple planet at the edge of the realm! Worth seeing the worlds built expand as this is the first of many films as the mystery of past and future collide!!"
"3.5⭐️ A cross between Star Wars and Seven Samurai, well basically all of Kurosawa’s samurai films (not surprisingly..I believe it’s common knowledge that The Hidden Fortress was a huge influence on Lucas himself), with a tiny dash of Starship Troopers..though without the tongue in cheek or self awareness.
Since I loved all those films I didn’t hate this at all. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely not as good or as emotionally compelling as it’s influences but it tries really hard, has some very cool imagery and does manage to cinematically convey somewhat of an epic quality, especially with that final scene. It just doesn’t give enough to sink our teeth into or to leave us wanting more. Sadly the only character with any strong amount of charisma, one I did want to see more of, was killed off.
So yes, there are missed opportunities. The force is not quite so strong with this one, yet there’s probably enough there to satisfy a lot of sci fi lovers. So maybe I will watch part 2. But maybe I won’t. Will see how I feel by then."
"As everyone knows, this was intended to be Zack Snyder's entry into the Star Wars universe, and for whatever reason, was rejected. So now there will forever be a constant comparison between the two. So be it.
Once you get past the idea that the antagonists are basically "Nazi-youth in space", you may realize that there actually are some things in this movie that are done even better than the Star Wars universe. The laser blasters are better, the fight scenes are grittier, and there's even the occasional curse word thrown in for punctuation. The special effects are on point, and the set designs were innovative, and some of the visual ideas are quite original.
Now for the bad... The main villain can't hold a candle to the menacing persona of Darth Vader and the Empire. The story is weak and the character development feels rushed. There are a few hokey moments that seem like the movie takes itself too seriously. So this isn't the one to dethrone Star Wars, but it is a welcome addition to the genre. Overall, I enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing part 2 in April. 8.5/10"
"There are two really good reasons to dislike this movie. The first, it’s rips off not only every fantasy sub-genre and cliche it openly rips off about what, 20 different movies? The second, there’s no doubt about where this movie falls on the current political and social ideations and the symbolism beats you over head continuously. For me personally, I don’t care about the first. I think Snyder’s earned the right to make his own world, especially considering what DC/WB did to him (which I’ll never forgive). The second? It’s obvious where I fall on the political spectrum and will refrain from preaching because I love this site. Those two aside, as a fantasy action movie with a good story and an A+ budget, all 10’s across the board. Exciting, all the cliches we love, the just right amount of cheesiness and some awesome fight scenes. And if you lean into it and allow yourself to excuse the blatant thievery, it’s what I’m always looking for, super fun. I really, really, really liked it. Snyder forever, man. "

" So nice to look at that you want to love it. A lot feels borrowed from other movies. While all the slow motion usage is over the top and holds the film back from greatness as well.
Snyder is also not too different from Michael Bay. Where he is better at visuals than storytelling.
Both filmmakers also stretch out a thin story into epics. I don’t think the movie is completely terrible though. Like critic reviews are saying.
Some Snyder fans gave me hell for not loving!it. So much is like it came straight from Star Wars."
