Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

"Pretty good. Not overly gory or horrifying. Seemed like Goosebumps for high schoolers or something. I liked a lot of the shorts, and loved the outro scenes that looked like a VHS tape playing. The story at the end of each episode was intriguing. "

It may be an odd format for people who aren’t familiar with his work or that you have to think 🤔 in that 2 tales can be told in one episode but they can be quite complex and you almost need time to process what you just saw, not because it’s graphic scary, but because it’s something that you’ve never seen before & in Ito’s hands it’s both fantastical and yet also makes perfect sense. Ito takes the premise of loved ones erecting memorials to people who have died on the sides of roads/highways as his jumping off point and turns it into a horrifying tale of a town that has tombstones that appear exactly where a person took their last breath.
