Still traumatised by her brush with a psychopath, Detective Cassie Maddox transfers out of the Murder squad and starts a relationship with fellow detective Sam O'Neill. When he calls her to the scene of his new case, she is shocked to find that the murdered girl is her double. What's more, her ID shows she is Lexie Madison - the identity Cassie used, years ago, as an undercover detective. With no leads, no suspects and no clues to Lexie's real identity, Cassie's old boss spots the opportunity of a lifetime: send Cassie undercover in her place, to tempt the killer out of hiding to finish the job.

"What? This was a completely unrealistic premise with wayyyyy too much description, metaphors, internal monologues etc. A tremendous amount of pages to tell what turned out to be a fairly straightforward (and absurd) story. I’ve also never seen a book take so long to wrap up. You get to the turning point, and then oh wait there are still many, many more chapters. "
"My fav of the series. "

"I’m still reeling from the back to back reveals of the last 50 pages or so, but my goodness was this good. I loved this even more than the last book, even though it focused much less on the procedural side. This book messes with your head as much as the undercover work messes with Cassie. I got a lot of The Secret History (an excellent novel by Donna Tartt) vibes, but it veered enough away from similarity that it was completely separate in my mind as I was reading it. There is just something creepy about an old manor house in the countryside, and it was put to use here to magnificent effect. It helps that I loved Cassie from In the Woods, so I enjoyed being inside her mind. I’m taking a break from Tana French (for now...I’ll always come back), but I’m pretty sure I’ll be watching the Starz series to see how they play it."
