One of Betches' 7 Books by Black Authors You Need to Read This Summer One of Elite Daily’s Books Featuring Interracial Relationships You Should Read In 2020 One of Marie Claire’s 2020 Books You Should Add to Your Reading List When a Nigerian woman falls for a man she knows will break her mother’s heart, she must choose between love and her family. At twelve years old, Azere promised her dying father she would marry a Nigerian man and preserve her culture, even after immigrating to Canada. Her mother has been vigilant about helping—well forcing—her to stay within the Nigerian dating pool ever since. But when another match-made-by-mom goes wrong, Azere ends up at a bar, enjoying the company and later sharing the bed of Rafael Castellano, a man who is tall, handsome, and…white. When their one-night stand unexpectedly evolves into something serious, Azere is caught between her feelings for Rafael and the compulsive need to please her mother. Soon, Azere can't help wondering if loving Rafael makes her any less of a Nigerian. Can she be with him without compromising her identity? The answer will either cause Azere to be audacious and fight for her happiness or continue as the compliant daughter.

"This would be the first time that I would ever dnf a book at 74%, normally I like to dnf pretty early in the book if I see that I am losing interest in knowing about either the characters or how the story ends, to avoid wasting my time. But for some reason, I decided to power through the first few chapters despite not liking the main female character. My god was she so insufferable. I was drawn into this book because I am a Nigerian who also immigrated to Canada and was excited to read about how an interracial couple especially one with a Nigerian female lead, can blend in their cultures together to have a lovely relationship but unfortunately, this book disappointed me.<br/><br/>Azere<br/>First off, this girl was beyond annoying, spineless to her mother's every wish/command and in my opinion she was such an awful friend to Christine. She never speaks her mind when something is bothering her especially to Rafael and for some stupid reason, she is always taking out her anger towards Christine and apologizing later, which ****** me off so bad. Plus she is so indecisive, my goodness. It ****** me off so bad because I am always in search of a good romantic story with a strong nigerian female but most of them (not all) always make the female lead go through struggles (I am looking at you "his only wife") or make her insufferable. <br/><br/>Rafael<br/>Sir, I liked you at the beginning but you also don't have common sense. You are about to have a baby with your girlfriend but your stupid brain didn't tell you that, "Oh let me open up about my past to my now partner to avoid any misunderstanding" but nooooo, ofcourse the storyline just had to have a stupid misunderstanding trope in there, like please authors not every romance book needs a conflict or misunderstanding, there is nothing wrong with happiness throughout the book. <br/><br/>In conclusion, these two idiots who are in an interracial relationship where both cultures play a major role in their lives don't know how to incorporate them together to have a successful relationship. <br/><br/>I am sure in the end they worked things out but whatever. <br/>"
"I really loved this book. I wanna cry, it was so good. Beautiful and honest. I'm still mad about the mom and how she was low key a hypocrite, but im proud of Azere for forgiving her. If it was me I would have dragged it on a bit longer lol. All in all so freaking good. I'm definitely going to purchase for my own collection. 10 out of 10! 😍🥰🤩"
"What a great read. I couldn’t put it down. I laid in my bed on a Sunday and dove in. Didn’t want to put it down. Azere represents anyone who is trying to find their way in a world filled with other’s expectations. Definitely going to read it again because the first time was too fast. Azere and Rafael are just 😍😍😍."
