Seemingly unconnected. A cop walked into a nursing home and unloaded his weapons on elderly and staff alike. A mass of school shootings. Prison riots of unprecedented brutality. Mind-boggling acts of violence in every state. 4 D A Y S A G O...The murders increased ten-fold...3 D A Y S A G O...The President addressed the nation and begged for calm and peace...2 D A Y S A G O...The killers began to mobilize...Y E S T E R D A Y...All the power went out...T O N I G H T...They're reading the names of those to be killed on the Emergency Broadcast System. You are listening over the battery-powered radio on your kitchen table, and they've just read yours. Your name is Jack Colclough. You have a wife, a daughter, and a young son. You live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. People are coming to your house to kill you and your family. You don't know why, but you don't have time to think about that any more. You only have time to....R U N.

"I am a big fan of Blake Crouch. Unfortunately I did not care for this book. I much prefer when his books are more hard sci-fi oriented. This is a straight up action adventure with lots of running, shooting, car chases, etc. I was bored the whole way and only finished it because Crouch is the author. If you like an action adventure you may very well love this. But if you are looking for something more like Dark Matter or Recursion, this isn’t it"

Run is a terrifying novel. Violence is taking over the United States. When Jack hears his name broadcast as someone who needs to be killed, he packs up his family and they run. Food, gas, and water are scarce. Those affected by the violence run in packs. They are organized. The set up road blocks. They murder people without a second's hesitation.
I finished Run in two sittings. My heart was in my throat through most of the book, as Jack's family narrowly escapes situation after situation.
What got me most about this book was the relationship building and the family dynamics. Who would have thought that underneath the gruesome surface, Run would be a love story? Or a book about the strength in family?
Crouch crafted the kind of story you can picture yourself in. I can easily see it adapted for the big screen or a series.
I recommend Run for fans of the apocalypse trope, fans of edge of your seat thrillers, and fans of family journeys.
Content warnings-
violence of all types (guns, knives, chainsaws, bombs, etc.), blood and gore, filicide

"My first disappointment from this author! I didn’t realize this was an older book that he’d previously self published. Basically, very little plot. The title is ‘Run” and for most of the book, that is all that happens. The characters run. They are safe. They run some more. And repeat."
