Winner of the 2022 Lammy Award for Transgender Fiction From acclaimed author Jeanne Thornton, an epic, singular look at fandom, creativity, longing, and trans identity. Gala, a young trans woman, works at a hostel in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. She is obsessed with the Get Happies, the quintessential 1960s Californian band, helmed by its resident genius, B----. Gala needs to know: Why did the band stop making music? Why did they never release their rumored album, Summer Fun? And so she writes letters to B---- that shed light not only on the Get Happies, but paint an extraordinary portrait of Gala. The parallel narratives of B---- and Gala form a dialogue about creation—of music, identity, self, culture, and counterculture. Summer Fun is a brilliant and magical work of trans literature that marks Thornton as one of our most exciting and original novelists.

"I really wish I could give this 10 stars but 5 is the max. I’m overwhelmed with a lot of feelings. I tried to pick up this book a few times before finally reading it. I think the author saying B— really tripped me up. I was like “what are they saying?!” It was kind of frustrating in some regards but this book is made with magic in mind. The generational divide between Gala and B— is such a huge thing because the way Gala is telling B—‘s story, she is handling it with all the grace of a Greek chorus! Even connecting their stories through the granddaughter B— never knew they had! Lit Fic writers have so much talent! Especially Trans fiction writers!!! The story of B— or Diane is one that is very sad and is common in the world of pop music. I can’t believe their family made them detransition. It’s ******. And I didn’t realize Lana’s connection to B— until Harry confronts them at the studio. The writing was well thought out and inspired by histories of several bands! So beautiful!!"
