Joe Abercrombie
The New York Times bestselling first book in Joe Abercrombie's The Age of Madness Trilogy where the age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die. The chimneys of industry rise over Adua and the world seethes with new opportunities. But old scores run deep as ever. On the blood-soaked borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock struggles to win fame on the battlefield, and defeat the marauding armies of Stour Nightfall. He hopes for help from the crown. But King Jezal's son, the feckless Prince Orso, is a man who specializes in disappointments. Savine dan Glokta -- socialite, investor, and daughter of the most feared man in the Union -- plans to claw her way to the top of the slag-heap of society by any means necessary. But the slums boil over with a rage that all the money in the world cannot control. The age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die. With the help of the mad hillwoman Isern-i-Phail, Rikke struggles to control the blessing, or the curse, of the Long Eye. Glimpsing the future is one thing, but with the guiding hand of the First of the Magi still pulling the strings, changing it will be quite another . . . "Imo Abercrombie writes great characters. Like Savine, daughter of Glotka, character arc. Looking forward to 3rd and final book in the series coming out next week. "

"Joe Abercrombie stands out as one of my favorite authors. I’ve read the First Law Trilogy multiple times, as well as the standalones after. I was nervous and excited the first time reading A Little Hatred when it came out, as I had very high expectations. To be honest, the first time reading it through, I felt it was a letdown. It was a fantastic story, but I didn’t feel it was up to par of the other 6 books. <br/><br/>Where were the “Named Men” that I loved reading about? Who were these new people? Why did they seem more one dimensional then the characters of ages past? Reading it a second time around, I found more of these connections, got that feeling again of “being with old friends” (albeit bad ones in most cases), and started to recognize more that because they are younger they are still trying to work themselves out. I paid more attention to what's happening in the South (did Ferro kill the Prophet?), along with Sulfur appearing just when something exciting is about to go down. <br/><br/>I also love seeing how the prophecy unfolds. On a second read, it was finally clear on the Lamb? Originally, I had read this thinking of Lamb (Logan?) in Red Country, now it could be Orso? Exciting! His character, as well as Rikke really grew on me. I’m still not a huge fan of Leo, but seeing the character arc adjust with the “Great Wolf” was really satisfying. I also can’t wait to see what’s in store for Broad, who has some of the more memorable passages in the book, that he’s always “trigger ready”.<br/><br/>Can’t wait for September for book 2!<br/>"
