The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves. The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.Yet a chance encounter with an anonymous, and handsome, Maridrinian causes Zarrah to question whether the violence she’s perpetrated is justice or a crime. And as she continues to meet the nameless man each night, she finds common ground—and fiery passion–in his arms. But when identities are revealed, Zarrah must decide whether to embrace a chance at peace… or march to the drums of war.

"I didn’t want to continue the series after learning this book wasn’t about Aren and Lara, but I’m sure glad I did! How is Keris and Zarrah’s story even more entertaining? When is book 4 coming? I need to know what happens next. I’ve now jumped into this world head over feet and will not be able to come up for air until I know. I like that Keris is clever and has good one liners. I like that their relationship is spicier. I enjoyed knowing the parallel story that was taking place before, during and after Aren and Lara’s. The world is so large and vivid now. More please!"

""If anyone discovered what was between you, Your father would kill you because what you two are doing is forbidden by both your peoples. If you were dirt-poor farmers, it would be forbidden, but you are the heirs of the most powerful families on the continent!" Coralyn
Two enemies who fall in love with each other during a time of war between their borders. None with knowledge of whom the other really is; afraid of what reveling their true name might mean for their love. Keris, son of King Serin. How he hates his father and everything that he stands for. Keris doesn't want to rule. He is a scholar preferring books and knowledge over war and chaos. This book takes place during the war between Maridrina and Ithicana, while Serin has overthrown Ithicana and has imprisoned King Aren of Ithicana. This plot is told by Prince Keris and Lieutenant Zarrah Anaphora, niece of the empress of Valcotta. THey book goes over their pov as the second books plot is happening. How they met fell in love and the events of Zarrah being held in the Harem while King Arin is also being held prisoner in by King Serin. Action packed, lots of banter, romance, alliances, murder, torture, and adventures to take back the bridge. Ends on another great cliffhanger! cannot wait to read the next. Fantastic world build. Beautiful cover art. Highly recommend."
"4.5 stars
This was a unique read in the way that it has a dual timeline with The Traitor Queen. So while the reader gets to find out some rather twisted details compared to how it was initially perceived, it also has a disadvantage. Already knowing the final outcome caused it to lag a little in the middle, and I was tempted to skip sections of conversations that I already knew happened. Don't do what I did. The chapters would continue with what happened after Aren and/or Lara left a room.

The ending of this book goes past the battle at the end of The Traitor Queen. There were a couple dramatic surprises afterwards that I didn't see coming.

D L. Jensen has a talent for writing complex characters and scheming politics. This might be the most underrated book series out there."
