"The themes of madness, old gods, and mutating humans, are all tropes found in Lovecraft’s writing, but few have captured those themes on film as effortlessly as Carpenter. The Lovecraft inspiration, mixed with Carpenter’s score and gorgeous visuals, make In the Mouth of Madness a perfect storm of horror perfection."
"so yesterday was a particularly long and exhausting shift at work, so i decided to do my shot, get 🌿 for the first time in a while, and put on a film. tbh i'm not sure i could have picked a better choice of film for the evening, because it suited my mood perfectly.
its a surprisingly meta cosmic horror film, but unlike, say, Cabin in the Woods, it doesn't accuse the audience of being bloodthirsty otherworldly beings demanding sacrifices for our amusement; instead it posits that WE are the cosmic horror victims of insidious marketing and franchises. to be unaware of how much we're manipulated by industries and shills towards our purchases and opinions is to be living under a rock, or in a padded bunker.
mostly, i enjoyed it. some scenes put me in mind of carpenter's later, inferior 'vampires' (the confrontation of the villagers vs dogs), and there's some really horrible 90s cgi. but most of it is pretty great, and the body horror make-up is 👌, and most of all the batshit meta ending 🍿"
"This movie is just one hell of a ride, no joke, creepy AF kids roaming around, cornstalk looking Omen wanna be kid who scared the hell out of me, and of course Sam Neill giving one of his top (not best, imo) performance. Sam Neill takes you down this dark descent into madness like no one else could. The creep factor for me is off the charts for this one, if you want to consider yourself as any kind of horror film buff, this is a must watch for sure."
"An enjoyable Cosmic/Lovecraftian horror movie! I wasn’t blown away, but I did find myself enjoying this film quite a bit. Good acting, some really nice practical effects on display at times, and an intriguing concept. Some of the CGI doesn’t quite hold up today (which I wouldn’t expect it to but it can be rather blatant) and some of the practical effects were clearly executed better than some others. Per usual in Cosmic/Lovecraftian horror, the characters do weird and inexplicable things or make poor choices at times and typically this is explained away because oftentimes in this specific genre of horror, characters are destined to do these actions, their paths already being laid out for them whether they realize it or not, and that’s part of the horror, lack of choice and free will. This movie goes about explaining those decisions and choices in a rather meta way that I’m not sure how to feel about. But all in all, I’d highly advise watching this if you are a fan of Cosmic/Lovecraftian horror or 90s horror movies in general. "
