"Disclaimer - I haven’t seen or read any of the previous iterations of this story. I loved this. But there are some expectations that need to be set. This is a kids show. It’s produced by Nickelodeon and is rated PG with a warning of “fantasy violence “. I love that term. Never heard it before. But a show of that pedigree has certain things. A young, cute as hell cast, positive messaging being constantly drilled into you, cool little cheesy romances, tearjerking scenes everywhere and an overall wholesome vibe. I love all that. I’m also a fantasy/action geek and this hits the groove. Top notch budget leads to some truly epic action sequences, some great FX, super weird/cool animal characters abound. The first and last episodes are amazing. Definitely a top of the year one for me. But low key my favorite part? Watching all these great actors act, and speak, in their true voices "
"The first few episodes felt very awkward, but it gets better by ep3/4, even so I wouldnt say I ever loved the show but it was good. I never saw the movie, so I can't compare to another live action/adaptation but I did watch the original cartoon (and LOK!) and this felt too serious for me, there wasn't enough comedic relief at all. I understand that as a live action, they don't want it to look ridiculously silly by inserting too much humor (it just doesn't come across the same), but if I laughed once throughout the whole show it was a lot. I imagine these next couple seasons will be better, so my rating may (hopefully) go up but for now, 7/10 🌊⛰️🔥💨"
"This is a tough one to grade. I waited 5 years for this. The script moved rather slow. I ended up watching it on 1.5 speed, just because it seemed normal pace then. The script moves slow, but they move quickly through the plot lines. They merged things, changed who said what, changed some things, and left some things out. For example, Katara's necklace was never mentioned by her step grandfather. There are some emotional parts. The genocide of the air temple was hard to watch. Netflix isn't afraid to kill people off. There isn't really any gore, but it's still heartbreaking. If you are not a fan of the original show, a lot of this won't make sense. Both shows are the same length; roughly 7.5 hours long. I understand live action's differences compared to animation, but they could of just done more. If they continue the 2nd chapter, I will give it another chance, but this is not good enough for a rewatch. "
"So I'm definitely out of my element with this one as I've actually never read or watched any Avatar comics or shows (blasphemy, I know), but I did enjoy this. I thought the costumes, special effects, and music were super cool. There were even some creepy aspects I wasn't really expecting. Could the dialogue and acting have been a little more mature? Yes, but I know that it was trying to stay in line with how the anime is meant to be. Good introduction for an Airbender novice I'd say. "
"Just one episode in so far. First impressions: acting is weird, pacing is weird, editing is weird. Character motivations are weird. Not enough time spent on development. Which is weird since it’s a show and they have all the time in the world to properly flush out these characters. Effects are super cool. They managed to make earth benders look so much cooler than fire benders. "
"It's better than the movie.
I had hope it would be good after hearing the original creators join the team. Yet having finished the 1st season, I now know why they left. The underlying tones have shifted, and even the progress made has completely changed as compared to the original. In the first season it was about learning to master water. In this first season, Aang never even uses waterbending. Even in the finale it's not him (as the others put it)
Without spoiling, Aangs progress is severely halted in all regards and Kataras & Sokkas take presidence. They tried to explain too much of Aangs psyche instead of focusing on his becoming the Avatar.
However, they have improved on the original in some aspects too. I know that's crazy to say but this version truly dives into Zuko & Irohs relationship. We see how he bonds with Zuko & it feels pure. We didn't get any hint of that until season 3 in the original yet this one helps you realize Irohs bond to Zuko instead of just Zuko no longer taking advantage.
1 thing I truly loved about this show was it expanded on stories. Instead of trying to jam pack everything they could into their mini-series, they expanded. Scenes you've never seen before play out & give you a unique perspective. The beginning is beyond serious but they truly play into that to showcase this isn't the ATLA you know and love. It can be a bad thing since many of my friends thought it too serious and not goofy enough, still this is Avatar.
Now for some live action fails. The bending is way better than the movie & tries to play it up, but I don't think they had a big enough budget to pull it off (outside ep 1). Don't get me wrong some shots are great but it loses quality over time (not in length but some shots are straight blurry). Then there's the costumes. Costumes can be a bit overdone, especially on Azula & her friends. They clearly don't fit the actors making them look bulky & fake like a bad high school production.
But I am looking forward to more."
