What if Mulan had to travel to the Underworld? When Captain Shang is mortally wounded by Shan Yu in battle, Mulan must travel to the Underworld, Diyu, in order to save him from certain death. But King Yama, the ruler of Diyu, is not willing to give Shang up easily. With the help of Shang's great lion guardian ShiShi, Mulan must traverse Diyu to find Shang's spirit, face harrowing obstacles, and leave by sunrise--or become King Yama's prisoner forever. Moreover, Mulan is still disguised as the soldier called Ping, wrestling with the decision to reveal her true identity to her closest friend. Will Mulan be able to save Shang before it's too late? Will he ever be able to trust her again? Or will she lose him--and be lost in the Underworld--forever?

"This was a surprising premise! This closely follows the scene in Disney's animated Mulan where Mulan/Ping is facing off the Huns with a single cannon. There was a twist to this though, that led the the alternate story. <br/><br/>I feel like this was following Chinese stories, which was super cool. It just felt a little random and stiffly constrained to the plot triangle. I wish I know which stories the author based this off of or used so I could read them too. <br/><br/>The characters really matched Disney's which I thought was a pleasant surprise. The character development was done quite well considering the story's events. <br/><br/>The writing was aimed at a younger person and was off in some spots. But it was actually really compelling because of the story. <br/><br/>Overall, it was really good for canon fanfic. It holds a compelling adventure with the beloved Mulan and Shang. It's not on my favorites list but I enjoyed a different story featuring these two."
"This is a Twisted Tale version of the story of Mulan. This book begins at the point in the original story where Mulan shot the cannon at the snow embankment. What would’ve happened if Shan Yu still stabbed Shang with a blow that could be deadly. This book takes us through the story if Mulan had to save Shang from the Underworld. The story is completely different but the characters are still the same ones we love from the Disney adaptation. Mulan and Shang are really the main characters, the other soldiers and Mushu make a small appearance but not nearly as much. We are also introduced to new characters as Mulan, Shang, and his guardian travel through Diyu.
This is probably my favorite Twisted Tale in this series, I feel like it held so much depth to it that are sometimes lacking amongst the other books. Although it help similar characters, we never quite knew where the story was gonna take us. It wasn’t straight forward, it wasn’t super predictable. It had dark moments but still had some off the light elements of the original adaptation. It was easy to digest and kept me guessing until the very end. It is a Disney story so although there is some dark moments keep in mind that it is YA friendly. This boosted my love for the Disney stories though, definitely worth checking out! "

"<b>wow Wow WOW</b>!!!!!! That was FANTASTIC!!!! I LOVED Elizabeth Lim's writing style!!!! And the added character of Shi Shi was AMAZING!!!! I Loved this SO MUCH!!!! And while I won't give anything away, some parts of this book touched me personally!!!! Overall such a PHENOMENAL book, and it's tied for my top fav of the Twisted Tales series so far (Only because I have a soft spot for Tale as Old as Time, the Beauty and the Beast retelling)!!!!"
