"So I enjoyed parts of this book and still love the characters finally a nice little twist towards the end but still the story is dragging. I really feel like this could have been summed up sooner. I just think hardly anything special or important is happening which gives you that drive to keep going."
"Wow. The first half of the book was a little slower for me, but still good. The second half was crazy. My jaw was on the floor. I had to keep setting the book down and stare into space. So stressful! So amazing. Can’t wait for the next. Loved the ending!!! This needs to be made into a tv show with how entertaining and realistic the authors writing is. This series is becoming one of my favorite fantasies of all time! "
"Everyone in this book was acting so stupid.

Elias was making rash decisions without consulting anybody else in the group, even though his actions were impacting them. He was too trusting of Helene, which put other people at risk throughout the story. Laia was too wishy-washy with her feelings for the two main male characters, and she also needed to have more self-confidence, and that was really frustrating to read her doubt herself so much in this book.

In the first book, I was kind of disappointed because Helene didn’t have her own point of view and when I realized she did have a point of view in the second book I was ecstatic! However, I felt very let down because in the first book, Helena felt like a character that was questioning the Empire, even if it wasn’t as much as Elias was. And then in this book, it was like she just threw all of that out the window, and I felt that really stunted her character growth.

I had originally she might have a redemption arc later in the series, but now I know she could never earn one in my eyes. Helene willingly tortured her best friend’s mother (a woman who had only showed her kindness in the past). She also gave the order to torture numerous children and even said the could be killed if necessary. And she watched as the Commandant committed genocide of the scholar race. While Helene watched this genocide she thought to her self “this is just a slave class and they are beneath me.”

After all of that I’m supposed to believe this girl is deserving of a redemption arc and Elias’s love? Abso-*******-lutely not.

Although I had many issues with this book, I am still interested to see how the series continues and think some characters have the potential to be less annoying in the next book so I will continue this series."

"Sabaa Tahir does it again—A Torch Against the Night is an absolute masterpiece. The world-building is so rich and immersive that you can feel the weight of every shadow and secret. The characters are painfully real, their choices and struggles staying true to who they are, even when it hurts. The sense of confusion and hopelessness is woven in so masterfully that you experience it alongside them, making every small victory feel hard-earned. Dark, twisty, and impossible to put down—this book is everything I wanted and more."
"You know, these books, I love them, but it's not for Laias story though shes been through a lot, and it's not Elias though hes been through a lot too....HELENE IS THE BEST DAMN CHARACTER IN THESE BOOKS! she is the only one with any true character development from the start of An ember in the ashes, to the end of a torch against the night, shes loved, shes lost, shes gained followers shes lost people, shes gained a title she didnt want. I love her! Let's see what happens in A reaper at the gate!"
"The cruel prince series "
