From the author of the connected universe of the Cosmere comes the standalone novel from which spring characters who later play roles in the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive. In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy. But with one princess wed to the God King of their nation’s enemies in a bid for peace, the other finds she must rely on Breath-using mercenaries to try to rescue her sister from her monstrous husband.Lightsong the Bold, a lesser god who doubts his own religion, starts investigating mysterious murders in the Court of Gods and uncovers haunting clues to his own forgotten past. He is one of four gods who controls the army of Awakened Lifeless soldiers, and one faction is inciting an invasion of Idris despite the marriage treaty. Vasher―wielder of the sapient sword Nightblood―works behind the scenes against the declaration of war, but Lightsong’s visions of bloodshed prophesy its inevitability. Can the new queen, unaware of her sister’s imminent rescue attempt, persuade Lightsong and also somehow get through to the aloof God King―who she has been forbidden to speak to or even look in the eyes―before her homeland is destroyed?Other Tor books by Brandon SandersonThe CosmereThe Stormlight Archive● The Way of Kings● Words of Radiance● Edgedancer (novella)● Oathbringer● Dawnshard (novella)● Rhythm of WarThe Mistborn SagaThe Original Trilogy● Mistborn● The Well of Ascension● The Hero of AgesWax & Wayne● The Alloy of Law● Shadows of Self● The Bands of Mourning● The Lost MetalOther Cosmere novels● Elantris● Warbreaker● Tress of the Emerald Sea● Yumi and the Nightmare Painter● The Sunlit ManCollection● Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere CollectionAlcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians● Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians● The Scrivener's Bones● The Knights of Crystallia● The Shattered Lens● The Dark Talent● Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians (with Janci Patterson)Other novels● The Rithmatist● Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds● The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval EnglandOther books by Brandon SandersonThe Reckoners● Steelheart● Firefight● Calamity● Lux (with Steven Michael Bohls)Skyward● Skyward● Starsight● Cytonic● Skyward Flight (with Janci Patterson)● DefiantAt the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

"Obviously not my favorite Brandon Sanderson book, but it's still very enjoyable. This book may have the background context of a budding war and political tensions, but it's really about people and self-discovery. It can feel like a slow start and maybe even a slow book if you aren't interested in internal monologs or characters learning when to trust and when to be worry. Honestly, I really liked it. There are moments that made me gasp, cry, and growl. If you have enjoyed Sandersons work you should absolutely pick this one up."
"☆☆☆ 3/5. Good world building and coherent magic system. An engaging story once all of the characters were introduced and the plot revealed the primary conflict. It was a slow start for me. There are a few action scenes but most of the book is dialog or internal monologs lead by male characters (info dumps). We spend the entire book building up to a war only to wrap it up the last 5 pages.👎The couple female leads' personalities were disappointingly dull and dry. "
"I never thought I would get through this. It felt like 92% foam filler, with so much repetition about eating at large and grapes in particular I thought I would gag. <br/><br/>With that off my chest, I can say that this is a great example of a decent plot and lovely twists draped in so many layers of trite characterization and contrived scenes I wanted to stab myself with a talking sword. <br/><br/>However, as a writer I felt this a good case study: A favorite author, a smattering of genius, and a really bad book. What went wrong? Moreover, how did those shiny bits manage to stand out in the rubble?<br/><br/>Still, at least it wasn't James Dashner."
"This is my first BrandoSando novel. As a matter of fact this is my first epic too"

"Out of all Sanderson’s books this tends to be lower on everyone’s list. This is the second book that i read by him. I enjoyed Skyward more but Warbreaker was still really good. The characters are complex, the magic system takes time to understand but is still good and so is the world building.<br/><br/>In the beginning there were stuff that i wasn’t enjoying. The magic system was confusing. I didn’t like Vivenne at first because of her stubborness and she was too trusting. Lightsong at first was very meh. Throughout the story Vivenne and Lightsong do both change and become good characters. You get to learn about the world and magic with the princesses, Seri and Vivenne. Except for the beginning the information never felt overwelling. <br/><br/>"
"This book had more reveals in it than I anticipated. A very unique magic system with roots that seem to come from a strong religious background. This story is also darker than I expected, putting the characters in surprisingly terrifying situations.
A very emotional read that could come off as flippant in the first read through. "
