"2.5 rounded up, and only because of Nick Gentry.

Minus a star for the copaganda and for Sophia being this “strong, independent woman” who instantly submits to the incredibly paternalistic Ross.

I did not like Ross being the pursuer in the beginning of their relationship. Sophia should have had felt like she had more agency in that not only for the optics, but also for the fact that this whole thing started as a revenge plot.

Honestly, the revenge plot was too short lived and underserved the story. It was abandoned by 50% through, and then it felt like Kleypas was floundering to keep my interest.

I didn’t buy for a second that Ross would have held Nick against Sophia, so, the story felt apart for me after that weird blackmail plot. Nothing ever really came of it? I was confused why we even bothered.

Ross was mildly compelling. As was Sophia. Generally, though? Indifferent to them. The most interesting characters were Iona and Nick, and neither of them had that much page time.

Maybe Kleypas is just not for me? But also, I don’t see why so many people worship at her altar."
